Angus Gray McLaurin

Angus Gray “A. G.” McLaurin, World War II veteran and lifelong resident of Jones County, died at his home in the Red Hill Community on the morning of Thursday, Oct. 28, 2010 at the age of 88. Funeral services will be Monday at 10 a.m. at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, followed by a graveside service at Erata Cemetery, where he will be buried alongside his departed family. The service will be performed by Rev. John Richardson of Ellisville First United Methodist Church. Visitation will be Sunday 5-8 p.m. at Memory Chapel. In his lifetime, A. G. saw amazing changes and technological advances that led to the world we know today. Born on Sunday, Dec. 18, 1921, to Belle Trest McLaurin and William Franklin McLaurin, A. G. was named for his ancestor, one of the first Presbyterian ministers in the Red Hill Community. He married his beloved Edith Victoria Logan on Dec. 17, 1949. They became members of the Presbyterian Church and through their devotion proudly inspired two sons to enter into the ministry. During the war, A. G. honorably served with the 104th Infantry Division Timberwolves. The Timberwolves saw almost 200 days of fighting in France, Holland and Germany. A.G. received a Bronze Star for heroism during his service. After the war, he found work with the Masonite Corporation, where he remained until his retirement. Even well into his elderly years, A. G. remained active in Timberwolf reunions and diligently kept in touch with his fellow veterans through letters and visits. He also proudly attended Masonite retiree events. A. G. McLaurin is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Rev. William C. and Mary Jean McLaurin of the Red Hill Community; his grandchildren, Robin McLaurin Berlin of Sandersville, Alison McLaurin Vanderslice of Stringer, Sean Gilbert McLaurin of Thomaston, Ga., Vicki McLaurin Wooten of Slidell, La.; his great-grandchildren, Isabelle Paige McLaurin, Norma Alexandra Berlin, Zoe Madelyn Vanderslice; his brother, William Albert McLaurin; and daughters-in-law, Sandra A. McLaurin of Liberty and Judy McLaurin of Thomaston, Ga. He was preceded in death by his wife, Edith Logan McLaurin; his son, Rev. L. Gilbert McLaurin; and his siblings, DeLoris McLaurin Parker, Ada Mae McLaurin, Duncan Troy (D.T.) McLaurin and Charles Hubert McLaurin. Pallbearers will include Don Berlin, Rick Dement, Charles McLaurin, Sean McLaurin, Tommy McLaurin, Jason Vanderslice and Charles Wooten Jr. Memory Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
