Bertha P. Wigington

Bertha Wigington, affectionately known as Aunt Bertha to so many, went to her heavenly home on November 27, 2013. Funeral services will be held at Springhill Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday, November 30, 2013, with burial to follow at Springhill Cemetery. Rev. Chris Freeman and Rev. Rayborn Freeman will officiate. Her faith in God was such an inspiration to everyone. She loved the Lord and was a dedicated member of Springhill Baptist Church through the years. She started teaching Sunday school at the age of 18 and continued until age 75. She was still helping with Bible school at age 87. She attended the last national association church meeting in 2009 at the age of 91 years. She loved her family unconditional and supported them in everything and always encouraged them to be in church. Whenever you saw her, she always had a smile on her face and would tell you she felt just fine. So many children were carried to Bible school and singing school by her. Gardening was a favorite way of life for her and she loved to give everyone vegetables. She was known far and wide for her delicious dumplings. She loved quilting and made many beautiful quilts over the years. She looked forward to Thursday every week so she could quilt with her quilting friends and have lunch. Aunt Bertha, you will be missed and we love you! She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 68 years, A. B. “Short” Wigington. She is survived by one son, Carroll Wigington and one daughter, Jeanette “Sissie” (Jerrell) Todd, all of Laurel; grandchildren Judy (Donald) Payne, Jennifer Butler, April McCraw, Tessa Smith, and Tyra (Ray) Hendry; a host of great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one step-grandchild, one sister, Mary Lou Freeman Stover; and one brother, Marvin Perrett. Pallbearers are Bryan Jordan, Denny Welch, Carl Hill, Jr., Glenn Musgrove, Charles Ray Ashley, and Jeff Ivey. Honorary pallbearers are Bobby Ashley, Larry Ashley, Doug McHenry, and the Quilting Ladies of Union Line Quilters. Visitation will be held from 11:30 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Springhill Baptist Church. Memory Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
