Dorothy Ernestine Humphrey

Dorothy Ernestine Lightsey White Humphrey, age 96, of Heidelberg, died Thursday, February 26, 2015, at her residence. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 1, 2015, at Philadelphia Methodist Church with burial to follow in the Philadelphia Cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 1 p.m. Sunday. The Reverends Mark Barfield, Larry White, and John Hayes, III will be officiating. Dorothy has been a life-long resident of Heidelberg. After graduating high school in 1937, she attended Draughn’s Business School in Tupelo. Following school, she worked at the ASCS office in Bay Springs then later at the Leakesville office. At a family reunion, she was hired to work at the Chancery Clerk’s office in Paulding. She began work at the Bay Springs Bank in Heidelberg in January, 1952 where she was the Assistant Vice President and remained until retirement in 1978. In 1948 she married Burley Lee White, and they had two children the late David Burl and Marion Kaye now married to Glen Downs. Dorothy lost Mr. White in 1969. In 1978 she married J. C. Humphrey who shared her interest in gardening and travel. Overnight she gained two stepsons and seven grandchildren. Dorothy has been an active member of Philadelphia Methodist Church for years and has also been very active in her community as a member of the Daughters of the America Revolution, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Heidelberg Garden Club, the Coffee Club, and the Golden Age Club. Dorothy’s life is made better by her loving community and family. She was a beloved mother, friend, neighbor, and a lady at all times. Her family and friends will miss her warm smile, beautiful bluish grey eyes, and infectious laugh, but are consoled by the many wonderful memories of the lady who always put others first. She is preceded in death by her husbands, Burley White and H. C. Humphrey; parents, David and Habie Lightsey; her son, David Burl White; her sisters, Christine Morgan and Georgia Pack, her stepsons, Clinton and Buddy Humphrey, and a special daughter-in-law, Rebecca Hays. Mrs. Humphrey is survived by her daughter, Kaye Downs and her husband, Glen of Bay Springs and a special son-in-law, Johnny Hays and wife, Susan of Heidelberg. In addition Mrs. Humphrey has two wonderful grandchildren, April Kliesch and husband, John F. of Cramerton, NC, and John Hays and wife, Stephanie of Hickory, NC. She also has four great grandchildren, David, Elizabeth, John R. and Grace Kliesch, a host of nieces and nephews and many loving friends. Visitation will be at Memory Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Saturday, February 28, 2015. Pallbearers will be men from the church or grandsons. Memory Chapel is in charge of the services.
