Juanita P. Jefcoat

Juanita P. Jefcoat, 93, of Soso died Tuesday, April 30th at South Central Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Jefcoat was a faithful Christian and a member of Big Creek Baptist Church where she was a choir member and taught Sunday School and Ladies Bible Studies for numerous years. She was also the Church Historian and chronicled a cherished history of the Church. She was a retired educator having served as both teacher and principal. She graduated from the University of Southern Miss with her B. S., Masters, and Specialist degrees in Elementary education. She was a member of Alpha Delta Kappa teacher’s organization. She also enjoyed quilting, crocheting and gardening and loved her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her spouse, T. J. “Pete” Jefcoat; her parents, Wilson and Nancy Powell; and siblings, Theresa Blackledge, Ross Powell, Ray Powell, and Etta Fay Folkes. She is survived by her daughter, Ann Katherine Hastings of Soso; son, Robert Jefcoat and wife Patricia of Hattiesburg; eight grandchildren, Clark Jefcoat of Washington, DC, Kyle Jefcoat and wife Katie of Arlington, VA, Ken Jefcoat of Arlington, VA, Lorrie Thompson and husband Chris of Soso, Chellie Eavenson and husband Butch of Hattiesburg, Peter Hastings of Soso, John David Hastings of Soso, and Katherine Pittman and husband Andy of Ellisville; ten great-grandchildren, Andrew Thompson and wife Christine, Ross Thompson, Cade Thompson, Nicholas Eavenson, Ella Eavenson, Callie Hastings, Johnna Hastings, Parker Pittman, Annabelle Jefcoat, and Quentin Jefcoat; one great-great grandchild, Riley Thompson; sister, Evelyn Todd and husband Marvin; brother, Welton Powell and wife Joyce; sister-in-law, Willie Mae Powell; and a host of nieces and nephews. Grandsons and Grandsons-in-law will serve as pallbearers. The family is appreciative to the staff of Cottonwood Manor of Laurel for the kind and loving care provided to Mrs. Jefcoat. Memory Chapel of Laurel is in charge of arrangements. Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3rd at 3 p.m. at Big Creek Baptist Church with the burial in the Church cemetery. Visitation will be held 1:30 p.m. prior to the service. Rev Don Brown and Rev. Kenneth Flynt will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Big Creek Baptist Church Building Fund, 28 Big Creek Church Rd., Soso, MS 39480. Memory Chapel of Laurel is in charge of the arrangements.
