Margrete Cade Shepherd

Margrete Cade Shepherd was born December 1, 1924 and departed this life May 9, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. She was 89 years old. A long-time resident of Laurel, MS, and Petal, MS, Margrete moved to Panama City, FL in 2013. Left to cherish her memory are two sisters, Nell Phillips and Elizabeth “Libby” English; three sons, Walter Ekes, Gerald Shepherd, and Stephen Shepherd; three daughters, Joy Jelte, Karen Somers, and Lisa Hammers; two step daughters, Pauline Pope and Margaret Chapman; two step sons, Ben Shepherd and Roy Shepherd; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, relatives, and friends. She will be greatly missed by her faithful companion, her dachshund, Peanut. Margrete was preceded in death by her husband, J. T. Shepherd, Sr.; her parents, Walter Crigler and Dessie Lowe Cade; brother, Walter C. Cade; sisters, Catherine Kriner, Clara Pilgrim, Martha Sue Landrum, and Ann Reynolds; her children, Margrete Louise Ekes and J. T. Shepherd, Jr.; her step-children, J. W. Shepherd, Louise Cash, and Lois Marie Shepherd; and her grandson, Beau Cash. Mrs. Shepherd was a retired Administrative Assistant. She enjoyed reading, playing bingo, movies and music. She was a long-time member of Order of the Eastern Star, Laurel Chapter, and Plainway Baptist Church in Laurel. The family would like to express sincere gratitude to Dr. Marwan Obid, Dr. Ahmed Mohamed, Dr. Michael Jenkins and the staff at Emerald Shores Health and Rehab for the wonderful care our mother received. We would also like to thank the staff at Covenant Hospice and Bay Medical Center. Our heartfelt thanks is extended to Janice, Dominic, Chaplain Virgil and most especially Patricia, Barbara, Becky, Frank, Dorcus and Chaplain Michael for loving our moma and helping her in her journey home. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel, MS. Funeral services will follow at 10 a.m. Wednesday with burial at Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel, MS. In lieu of flowers, the family is setting up a fund at Tyndall Federal Credit Union to assist with burial expenses. Donations may also be made in Margrete Cade Shepherd’s name to Covenant Hospice.
