Monroe H. Wells

Monroe Hubbard (Hub) Wells, 85, of Laurel, died Sunday, August 29, 2010 at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Laurel with burial in Hickory Grove Cemetery. Rev. Gene Horton will officiate. The body will be placed in the church at 2 pm. A graduate of Ellisville High School, he entered the armed forces during World War II as soon as he turned 18. He served in the United States Marine Corp from 1942 – 1946 in such battles as Tarawa and Saipan in the South Pacific Arena as an amphibious landing craft operator. After the war, he continued his education at Jones County Junior College. He retired from the Laurel Police Department. He and his wife were the first to own and operate convenience stores and package stores in the Laurel area. A life-long Methodist, he was a member of First United Methodist Church. He loved his God, country, and family and will be greatly missed. He was a Mason and a member of the Faternal Order of Police. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Myral Wells. Survivors include his wife, Mary Wells of Laurel; daughter, Sandra Kay Vaughn and husband Ray of Laurel; four grandchildren, Stacey Byrd and husband Eric, Kelly Thatch and husband Blain, Shannon Passmore and Nancy Hocutt and husband Brian; eleven great grandchildren, Tyler Byrd, Emily Byrd, Annie Kathryn Byrd, Chloe Thatch, Sophie Thatch, Gracie Thatch, Laken Boutwell, Sydney Passmore, Dane Thomas Hocutt, Anna Clair Hocutt, and Everett Hocutt; brother, Harry Wells and wife Geraldine of Laurel; and sister Ann Broom and husband Ken of Prentiss. Pallbearers will be David Lyons, Dewey Lee, Joe Perrett, Jim Smith, Jim Strickland, Don Sumrall, Eric Byrd, and Blain Thatch. Honorary pallbearers will be Winston Wells, Jim “Poochie” Parrish, John Gatlin, Donnis Collins, and Dan Walters. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Jones County Junior College Hub Wells Memorial Scholarship for Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice fund. Visitation will be held from 2 pm Tuesday, August 31 until the service time at First United Methodist Church in Laurel. Memory Chapel of Laurel is in charge of the arrangements.
