Reverend George Hilton Purvis

George Hilton Purvis of Ellisville, MS, left this life and stepped into heaven to greet those waiting for him on November 23, 2024, at the age of 91. He was born in Laurel, MS, to Maynard and Marie Pearson Purvis of the Glade community on October 25, 1933. His parents preceded him in death as did his siblings, Vaughn Ray Purvis (Esther), Florence Rayner (Woodrow), Ruby Hilbun (James), Emma Kate Shows (James), John Purvis (Betty) and Helen Lowell. Also included, is his son-in-law, Leonard Kenneth Smith and one great grandchild, Mason Smith. Mr. Purvis attended Glade School. He served in the United States Army. He went into the ministry as a pastor in the Congregational Methodist Church in 1967. After moving the family to Texas, he attended Westminster Bible School. Reverend Purvis pastored churches in Texas and Mississippi in the following years. He served as a leader in the Mississippi church conference as president, and as president of the Mississippi Adult Camp Board for many years. He was recognized for fifty plus years of pastoral ministry in the Congregational Methodist Church. He used his talents in construction to help build new facilities for the Foreign and Home Mission Boards of the CMC church and the Mississippi CMC campgrounds. Reverend Purvis is survived by his wife of 71 years and helpmate in ministry, Florence Eleanor Walters Purvis, his daughters Karen Partain Smith, Janise (Lee) Edmiston, Marie (Ed) Smith and Millie (James) "Chip") Williams. He leaves behind grandchildren, Julie (Jess) Partain, Jamie Partain, Kim (Billy) Smith Marascalco, Brian (Heather) Smith, Amy Smith, Max (Amy) Edmiston, David (Melissa) Smith, Vernon (Libby) Smith and Drew (Jeniffer) Smith. Rev. Purvis leaves behind brothers and sisters in-law, many nieces and nephews, and 21great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. Memory Chapel Funeral Home will handle the services. Visitation will be there on Wednesday, November, 27, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. The service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Burial will be at Mount Vernon Church Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Vern Smith, Drew Smith, Gene Purvis, Rocky Purvis, Kevin Walters, and Kale Walters. Honorary pallbearers will be John A. Purvis and David Smith.
