Robbie Jo Carter

Robbie Jo Carter, 91, of Laurel went to be with her Heavenly Father, Saturday, March 30, 2013, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, with her family by her side. She was born on July 17, 1921, in Savannah, TN. She was the daughter of Hettie Wolfe Wells and James Harry Wells, Sr. She attended schools in Savannah, TN and moved to Laurel in 1939. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Ann Wells, her twin brother James Harry Wells, Jr., her daughter Martha Elizabeth “Libby” Strahan, her granddaughter Jennifer Strahan, and great grandson John Wesley Foster. She is survived by her children, Judy Tisdale of Laurel, Ed (Angie) Carter of Laurel, Cynthia (Michael) Harris of Gadsden, AL, Debbie (Dean) Causey of Destin, FL. She is also survived by 9 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandchildren, son-in-law Al Strahan of Hattiesburg, sister-in-law Elsie Weiss Carter of Laurel, Violet Wells of New Castle, Indiana and many nieces and nephews. Robbie Jo worked many years with her husband J. Edwin “T. I.” Carter, Sr. in his Sporting Goods and Hardware store. She also worked in the shoe departments of Williams on Magnolia, Carter-Heide (later Effird’s), and retired from McRae’s in Sawmill Mall. She was a long time member of First Baptist Church of Laurel and proudly raised her five children in that church. She especially loved spending time outside with her beautiful flowers and plants and loved animals, including her many cats. Affectionately known as “Mam-Maw” by her grandchildren, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, homemaker and loved by everyone whose life she touched. Her grandchildren adored her witty sense of humor. Her hardworking spirit was evident in all she accomplished. Her grace and beauty were the epitome of a Southern Belle. Please join us in the celebration of life of our beloved mother, Robbie Jo Carter. Visitation will be on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 from 9:30 am until 11:00 am followed by the service at 11:00 am at Memory Chapel in Laurel. Burial will be in Lake Park Hills Cemetery. Dr. Randy Turner will officiate. Pallbearers will be Bobby Tisdale, Al Strahan, Jerry Bowman, and grandsons, Tim Bowman, Richard Causey, and Edwin Carter. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to The Good Sheppard Clinic through First Baptist Church of Laurel, P. O. Box 2636, Laurel, MS 39441 or the Christian Food Mission, 506 Chantilly Street, Laurel, MS 39440. Memory Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
