Robert Lavell Hathorn Jr.

Robert Lavell Hathorn Jr. was born December 12, 1940 and departed this life on May 9, 2024. Robert was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 51 years, Nan Hathorn; his parents, Tennie G. and Robert Hathorn; his son, Kenneth “Lee” Parker; and his sisters, Helen Haas and Genell Cope. Nan and Robert always famously said that they “did not do steps,” so he is survived by his daughters, Diane Dobbs (Randall) and Ann Marie Hathorn and his sons, Mark Hathorn (Carol) and Bubba Hathorn (Cassie). He also survived by his sister, Faye Gandy (Jerry); by his sisters-in-law, whom he famously called the “Tell-a-Grahams” Kay Winpigler and Carol Cooper; and his nine grandchildren: Johnny Dobbs (Susan), Kris Dobbs, Joseph Dobbs, Mallory Giovengo (Brandon), Erin Harrison (Nathan), Baylea Hogan, Brooklyn Tucker (John Thomas), Taylor Hathorn, and Rob Parker. Robert also leaves behind 9 great-grandchildren: Dalton Dobbs, Jordan Dobbs, Dakota Dobbs, Jaden Flynt, Sawyer Dobbs, Abree Giovengo, Scarlett Dobbs, AnaLynn Giovengo, Hollyn Tucker; special nieces, Lisa Winpigler, Ashley Jensen, Pollyanna Magee, and Shellie Robinson; and numerous other nieces and nephews. Robert owned his own business, Hathorn Carpet Service, and he installed flooring and carpet in many homes in Jones County and the surrounding area over the last several decades. When he was not working to provide for his family, he enjoyed cutting grass, watching Westerns, and attending all of his grandchildren’s sporting events. He was a great storyteller, and if you think that any of his children and grandchildren are hilarious (they are), they got it from him. Visitation for Robert will take place on Friday, May 10th, from 1:30 to 2:30 PM at Memory Chapel Funeral Home in Laurel with a graveside service to follow at Indian Springs Baptist Church Cemetery at 3:00 PM with the Revs. Richard Clark and Brent Benson officiating. Serving as pallbearers are Johnny Dobbs, Kris Dobbs, Joseph Dobbs, Brandon Giovengo, Sawyer Dobbs, and Caleb Winpigler. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters: Mallory Giovengo, Taylor Hathorn, Baylea Hogan, and Brooklyn Tucker.
