Mr. Jones departed from this life on Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at the age of 82, leaving behind a legacy of integrity, dedication, love, and distinguished service to his country. Born in Laurel, Mr. Jones spent over 50 years away before returning to his cherished hometown for the last decade of his life, where his profound love for Laurel and Jones County was evident in all aspects of his life. He was a pillar in the community, known for his deep roots and enduring affection for the area. A graveside service to honor the life and memory of Mr. Jones will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, at 12:00 p.m., at the serene Hickory Grove Cemetery in Laurel. The service will be presided over by the Reverend Ken Johnson, reflecting on the life and virtues of Mr. Jones. The role of pallbearers is entrusted to family members and close friends, including Brent Jones, Payne Jones, Reece Jones, Hayden Jones, Adam Bryan, and Jay Jones, who will carry forward Mr. Jones's legacy with honor and respect. Mr. Jones proudly served in the United States Navy from July 13, 1961, to March 16, 1965. During his service, he deployed multiple times aboard the USS Shangri La aircraft carrier, a testament to his dedication and bravery. His military service was a source of immense pride for him and an inspiration to those who knew him. This proud tradition of service is being continued by his grandson, Hayden Jones, who has enlisted in the U.S. Army and is set to begin basic training this year, honoring and extending the legacy of commitment and courage exemplified by his grandfather. In his professional life, Mr. Jones was a respected heating and air specialist. Beyond his professional achievements, he was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in hunting and fishing. His culinary skills, particularly his exceptional brisket and unique cooler chicken, were legendary within the family. Many cherished memories were made at his home on Eagle Lake, where family gatherings, laughter, and shared meals were abundant. These moments remain among the fondest memories for his grandchildren, echoing the joy and unity he brought to their lives. Mr. Jones's love story with his wife, Kay, spanned over 63 years, a testament to their deep and enduring bond. His devotion to Kay was unwavering, and their relationship stood as a beacon of love and partnership to all who knew them. Mr. Jones leaves behind a cherished family, including his beloved wife, Mrs. Kay Jones; his sons, Mitchell Jones and his wife Maria, and Mark Jones; his grandchildren, Peyton Jones Bryan and her husband Adam, Brent Jones and his wife Stephanie, Payne Jones, Reece Walker Jones, Hayden Jones, and Macy Jones; as well as numerous nieces and nephews who will forever hold his memory in their hearts.
