Amorita Gordon

Amorita Gordon was born in Kemper County November 24, 1925, and died at South Central Regional Medical Center November 1, 2015. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George R. King; parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. C. Gordon; brother, Mr. George Wade Gordon; sister, Mrs. Oliver Jean Peters. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Ruby Gordon; a nephew, Herbert Butler; two nieces and their spouses, Lynn Cochran (Glenn), and Robin DeHart (Chuck); a favorite cousin, Annie Neal (Noot) Cochran; numerous great and great-great nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Betty Riley. Amorita was a member of the First United Methodist Church where she was active in the Wesley Sunday School Class, United Methodist Women, and the Alter Guild. She was a member of the Laurel Arts League for many years. She graduated from U. S. M. with a degree in Art Education. Most of Amorita’s life was centered around her love for art. She worked at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art for 34 years where she taught children and adult art classes and served as curator of the collection and worked with exhibits. She taught art classes in the Laurel City Schools for seven years. Amorita was an accomplished artist who was well-known throughout Mississippi having one-person exhibits at Lauren Rogers, J. C. J. C., and several private galleries across the state. Her paintings may be found in numerous homes in Laurel and Southeast Mississippi. She combined her love for art with her love for traveling, visiting many of the famous museums in Europe. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, Friday, November 6, at 2:00 p.m. with visitation at the church beginning at 1:00 p.m. Burial will follow at Lake Park Cemetery. The service will be conducted by the Reverend Rebecca Luter, pastor of Farmington Presbyterian Church in Germantown, Tennessee. Pallbearers will be Herbert Butler, Glenn Cochran, Andy Allen, Jay Luter, Chris Luter, and Ron Brent.
