Doyle Anthony "Tony" Wheat, age 65, of Laurel, Mississippi, passed away suddenly on July 26, 2026. Tony was born on November 25, 1960, in Laurel, Mississippi, a city he loved deeply and proudly called home throughout his entire life. His commitment to Laurel was evident in both his personal and professional life, as he devoted himself to serving its citizens with unwavering dedication. A 1978 graduate of R.H. Watkins High School, Tony continued his education by earning a Master of Business Administration from The University of Southern Mississippi. His education prepared him for a lifetime of public service, but it was his character, integrity, and servant's heart that truly defined him. A faithful Christian and devoted member of First Methodist Church of Laurel, Tony lived his faith through serving others. He was known for his kindness, generosity, and willingness to help anyone in need. He never sought recognition for his good deeds, finding his greatest satisfaction in making a difference in the lives of others and in the community he cherished. Tony served the City of Laurel as a City Council member for sixteen years, where he worked tirelessly to improve the community he loved. At the time of his passing, he was serving as Public Works Director for the City of Laurel, a position he truly loved and to which he was wholeheartedly dedicated. His leadership, work ethic, and genuine concern for the people of Laurel earned him the respect and admiration of colleagues, employees, and citizens alike. Beyond his public service, Tony was a devoted son, a loving brother and uncle, and a loyal friend to many. He treasured time spent with family and was blessed with countless friendships. He especially enjoyed gathering with friends at The Loft and was a proud member of "The Board," where laughter, fellowship, and lifelong memories were shared. Tony was also a lifelong and passionate Ole Miss fan, faithfully cheering on the Rebels through every season. He had a special place in his heart for animals, especially dogs, and never missed an opportunity to show them kindness and affection. He is survived by his loving mother, Dave Ann Wheat; his brother, Tim Wheat and wife, Tonna; his niece, Tori Griewisch and husband, Chris; his nephew, Tate Wheat and wife, Hayleigh; and many extended family members and cherished friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Doyle F. Wheat. Tony's legacy is one of faith, humility, service, and an unwavering love for his hometown. It often seemed that everyone in Laurel knew Tony, and he seemed to know everyone. Whether through his years of public service, his church, or simply his genuine interest in people, he never met a stranger. The friendships he made throughout his life were among his greatest treasures. Because of Tony's faithful service, compassionate heart, and unwavering dedication, Laurel is a better place because he lived. A memorial service will be held at Laurel First Methodist Church on Friday, July 31, 2026, with visitation starting at 12 p.m. followed by the service at 2 p.m. Rev. Daniel Hathorne will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Animal Rescue League, in honor of Tony's lifelong love of animals, especially dogs, or to First Methodist Church of Laurel, reflecting the faith that guided his life and his commitment to serving others. Tony will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and his example of selfless service, compassion, and steadfast love for his family, friends, church, and community will continue to inspire all who knew and loved him.
