Freddie Marshall Leggett

On August 15, 2026, Freddie Marshall Leggett passed away peacefully at Forrest General Hospital in Hattiesburg, MS, with his family by his side. Freddie was born in Clarke County, MS on June 5, 1940, to Curt and Katherine Thomas Leggett. He graduated from Heidelberg High School in 1958, where he played the trumpet, played football, and drove a school bus during his senior year. Freddie earned his CB handle, “Yellow Bird,” from the 1968 yellow truck he drove back in the day, and around the hunting camp that he loved being a part of. Many will fondly remember Freddie on Friday nights at the football field, proudly running the flag through the “tunnel” ahead of the cheerleaders and football team. He was a familiar and beloved face in the community. Freddie spent his working years at Hess, and retired in 2005 after a lifetime career. Freddie never met a stranger. He had a way of making everyone feel welcome, always greeting folks with a smile and a warm hello. His kindness, humor, and genuine love for people left a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to know him. And if you ever met Freddie, even for the shortest amount of time, chances are he said something that you still remember to this day. Freddie’s life was defined by service to others. In 1972, he joined the Heidelberg Volunteer Fire Department, and faithfully served his community for more than 56 years. He served for many years as Assistant Chief, and was instrumental in establishing the Jasper County Search and Rescue. Freddie dedicated his life to serving his community, and looking out for the well-being of his family, friends, and neighbors. In 2023, the Town of Heidelberg honored his years of service by naming its new fire station the Freddie Leggett Fire Station. For 57 years, Freddie was a devoted member of WE King Masonic Lodge No. 615, where he attained the 32nd Degree Scottish Rite. He was a lifelong member of Philadelphia Community Church, and also attended Heidelberg Methodist Church. Freddie spent his working years at Hess Oil, and retired in 2005 after a lifetime career. Freddie was preceded in death by his parents; his beloved wife, Wanda, whom he married on May 22, 1965; and his brother, Gary. He is survived by his brother, Thomas “Bodie” (Jackie); sister-in-law, Doris Tigert; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. A visitation will be held Thursday, August 20, from 5:00–8:00 p.m. at Memory Chapel; and a second visitation will be held Friday, August 21, from 1:00–3:00 p.m. at Philadelphia Community Church in Heidelberg. Funeral services will follow at 3:00 p.m., officiated by Rev. Larry Sappington and Rev. Greg Forbus, with burial at Philadelphia Cemetery.
